Women's basketball conquers Lynchburg 73-61 on Wednesday

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Roanoke College women's basketball team came out victorious in a back-and-forth affair with Lynchburg on Wednesday night, leaving with a 73-61 road win.

How It Happened 

  • Lynchburg started quick and even looked to start to pull away at times in the first, but Roanoke kept finding their way back and kept them within arm's reach. 

  • The Maroons flipped the tables in the second, going on a 10-point run to put them in the lead. Roanoke outscored the Hornets 18-4 in the quarter to take a 33-28 lead into the half. 

  • RC kept their foot on the gas after the break, but Lynchburg had their own 10-point run after the media timeout to regain the lead, 48-46 going into the fourth. 

  • Roanoke was determined to take back the advantage in the final quarter. They slowly built a lead and protected it by going 11-11 at the free throw line to take home the 73-61 victory. 
     

Notes and Notables 

  • Freshman Paige Breuer tallied her third 20+ point game of the season, racking up 22 points on the night. Her night included going 9-9 at the free throw line and recording 11 fourth quarter points. 

  • Peyton Kirchner had herself a game as well, going a perfect 4-4 from behind the arc to total 12 points in the contest. 

  • Mariah Cain also joined the double-digit club in the contest, scoring 10 points. 

  • Cain was just one rebound shy of a double-double, racking up nine defensive rebounds in the game. She also had a team leading four assists and two blocks. 

  • Abigail Rice was perfect in her shooting, going 2-2 in field goals and 2-2 from the free-throw line. 

  • Breuer also topped the team in steals, taking away three. 

  • The Maroons had their second-best shooting performance of the year, hitting 48% of their field goals. The game was second only to last week's win over Guilford. 

  • The squad did have their best free-throw shooting game this season though, going 17-19 for an 89.5% conversion rate. 

  • RC was able to convert when Lynchburg turned the ball over, outscoring the Hornets 18-10 in points from turnovers.
