Vernarelli's hat trick helps lift Maroons above Allegheny

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College field hockey team came away with a 6-1 victory over the Allegheny Gators on Saturday, thanks in part to senior Grace Vernarelli's hat trick of goals.

Key Moment 

  • Freshman Maggie Beach scored with less than nine minutes left in the first half to put the Maroons up for good. 

How It Happened 

  • The Gators struck first, just under one minute into the game, off a penalty corner. 

  • Roanoke answered back after earning a penalty stroke which was converted by Vernarelli to bring the score to 1-1. 

  • Beach then doubled the tally for the Maroons in the 21st minute by putting away a rebound right in front of net. 

  • Sophomore Ashley Mountcastle found Vernarelli in the arc who, with her back to goal, fired a shot home to open the flood gates in the second half. 

  • Vernarelli snagged her third goal after spin moving a defender and sending the ball into the lower right corner of the goal from just inside the shooting arc. 

  • The Maroons struck again three minutes later off a penalty corner sent in by Mountcastle to Danielle Crabtree. Crabtree then found Maddy Holmes to finish off the play and make it 5-1. 

  • The last tally of the came from graduate student Lindsey Keyes who scored just in front of goal after being setup by Elyse Cosgrave

Notes and Notables 

  • Vernarelli's hat trick was the third of her career. Her previous two occurred against Ferrum in 2022 and 2023. 

  • All four of RC's assists came from the sophomore class. 

  • Keyes' goal was her first of the season and 14th of her career. 

  • Holmes' goal was also her first on the year and was the third of her career. 

  • Mountcastle's assist was the first point in her time with the Maroons. 

  • Crabtree's assist was her second of the year.

The Maroons round out their three game home stand on Tuesday (Sep. 10) with a non-conference contest against Southern Virginia at 7:00 pm.
