SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Roanoke college field hockey team fell in penalty strokes on Saturday afternoon in their first of two games in Sewanee this weekend.

How It Happened 

• The Maroons started the game strong, scoring within the first four minutes. Grace Vernarelli hammered home a rebound from a Mary Wisher shot to put RC up 1-0. 

• DePauw leveled the score just 10 minutes late though to make it a 1-1 game. 

• Neither one of the squads could find another goal in regular time, forcing overtime. 

• Double overtime was not enough to settle the contest as the teams went into penalty strokes after two scoreless 10 minute periods. 

• It took six strokes a side to decide the game with DePauw taking it 3-2 on strokes. 

Notes and Notables 

• Vernarelli's goal was her fourth of the season. 

• Vernarelli also led the team in shots with 13, seven of which were on target. 

• Ashley Mountcastle, Carsyn Poppa, Tess Taloumis, Lindsey Keyes, and Mary Wisher also all registered shots. 

• RC outshot DePauw 23-9 and had the upper hand in penalty corneres, 15-9. 

• Goaltender Madison Wingarter made four save in the game.
