Maroons Battle Generals, Fall Just Short in Top 15 Clash

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Washington and Lee 11, Roanoke 9
Location: Lexington, Va.

The Short Story: A late run from No. 6 Washington and Lee lifted the Generals to an 11-9 victory over the 15th-ranked Maroons in an ODAC women's lacrosse matchup in Lexington.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • W&L struck first, getting an Alex Petras goal just 37 seconds in. Libby Bowman answered for the Maroons at the 10:13 mark, but the Generals closed out the period with four straight markers to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Roanoke turned the tide in the second quarter, shutting W&L out in the period and gradually working its way back in the game. Goals from Bowman, Tracey Benzing and Tiernan Connor would pull the Maroons to within 5-4 by halftime.
  • RC started the third quarter with possession and a two-player advantage after a pair of W&L yellow cards inside the final minute of the first half. Maddie McDonald capitalized on the 7-on-5 situation, scoring from the 8-meter arc to knot the score at 5-5 with 14:07 to play.
  • The teams would trade goals for the remainder of the quarter, with scores from Sydney Harrison, Bowman and Connor matching tallies from the Generals. Connor's crease-roll goal from a Harrison assist made it an 8-8 game with 3:35 left in the period.
  • Julia Thomson put W&L in front for good (9-8) with 1:15 to play. The Generals would then grab two goals early in the fourth quarter, and another Thomson score put them ahead 11-8 with 12:42 remaining.
  • The Maroons had several chances to claw back, hitting two pipes and forcing three saves from W&L goalie Caroline Kranich. But RC wouldn't get on the board in the quarter until Kate Loughran scored from a Grace Koutouzis assist with 2:06 to play.
  • Sophia Chickering won the ensuing draw for the Maroons, but a Roanoke turnover gave possession back to the Generals, who were able to kill off the remaining time on the clock.
