Roanoke Cruises Past Lynchburg in Women’s Lacrosse

THE GAME FACTS

The Short Story: The No. 15 Maroons used a dominant second quarter to take control of the game, going on to beat the Hornets 20-4 in ODAC action in Salem.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lynchburg controlled play for long stretches of the first quarter, holding Roanoke to a single marker in the opening stanza. A goal from Reagan Bradley with 1:18 remaining gave the Hornets a 2-1 edge after 15 minutes.
  • But the Maroons quickly took command in the second period, firing in seven goals in the first 6:23 of the quarter and outscoring Lynchburg by an 11-0 margin in the frame. Tracey Benzing completed a hat trick with a pair of goals in the period, while Grace Koutouzis headed into halftime with five points (one goal and four assists).
  • Roanoke kept its foot on the gas coming out of the halftime break, pushing its lead to 16-2 on a Sarah Brisson goal with 6:25 to go in the third quarter. The Maroons would limit the Hornets to one goal in each of the final two periods in rolling to the big win.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Koutouzis finished with seven points, totaling three goals and four assists for the second straight game. Kate Loughran added two goals and four assists.
  • Six more Maroons recorded at least two points: Benzing notched a hat trick; Libby Bowman, Tiernan Connor and Sydney Harrison each posted two goals and one assist; and Zoe Blair and Maddie McDonald tallied two goals apiece.
  • Sophia Chickering racked up 12 draw controls, helping the Maroons amass a 22-5 advantage on the circle. Loughran, Natalie Mason and Maddie Stopkoski each collected three ground balls, and Mason also caused two turnovers.
  • Sydney Dumas paced Lynchburg with two goals.
UP NEXT
  • Roanoke will travel to Lexington to face sixth-ranked Washington and Lee on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
