THE GAME FACTS
Score: Washington and Lee 14, Roanoke 11
Location: Lexington, Va.

The Short Story: The Generals built up a big advantage and fended off a late rally from the Maroons, claiming a 14-11 victory in an ODAC men's lacrosse matchup in Lexington.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Roanoke held the lead twice in the opening minutes. Wyatt Whitlow scored off of a W&L turnover with 12:53 remaining in the first quarter, and a goal from Patrick Cullen made it 2-1 with 8:33 to play.
  • Tyler Spano tied things up at 2-2 for the Generals just 19 seconds after Cullen's goal, part of a 3-0 W&L run that put the home side in front for good midway through the opening period.
  • Goals from Jay Frye and Cullen sandwiched around a marker from the Generals' Jack Elliott made it a 5-4 game in W&L's favor heading into the second quarter.
  • The Generals outscored Roanoke 4-1 in that frame – with the Maroons' only goal coming from Sean Kennedy at the 8:45 mark – to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
  • W&L stretched the margin to 11-5 early in the third period, but Roanoke answered with a 3-1 stretch to close out the stanza. Goals from Kennedy, Julian Kammerman and Clayton Bewick helped bring the Maroons to within 12-8 by the end of the quarter.
  • Luca Docking bagged a transition goal with 12:10 left in the final period to trim the gap down to 12-9. The Generals answered with two straight tallies, pushing the lead back to 14-9 with 6:43 to go.
  • Kennedy scored again at the 4:24 mark, and Kammerman made it 14-11 with 2:41 to play. But W&L held the Maroons at bay down the stretch to finish the regular season unbeaten (9-0) in ODAC play.
