The Short Story: The Generals built up a big advantage and fended off a late rally from the Maroons, claiming a 14-11 victory in an ODAC men's lacrosse matchup in Lexington.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Roanoke held the lead twice in the opening minutes. Wyatt Whitlow scored off of a W&L turnover with 12:53 remaining in the first quarter, and a goal from Patrick Cullen made it 2-1 with 8:33 to play.
- Tyler Spano tied things up at 2-2 for the Generals just 19 seconds after Cullen's goal, part of a 3-0 W&L run that put the home side in front for good midway through the opening period.
- Goals from Jay Frye and Cullen sandwiched around a marker from the Generals' Jack Elliott made it a 5-4 game in W&L's favor heading into the second quarter.
- The Generals outscored Roanoke 4-1 in that frame – with the Maroons' only goal coming from Sean Kennedy at the 8:45 mark – to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
- W&L stretched the margin to 11-5 early in the third period, but Roanoke answered with a 3-1 stretch to close out the stanza. Goals from Kennedy, Julian Kammerman and Clayton Bewick helped bring the Maroons to within 12-8 by the end of the quarter.
- Luca Docking bagged a transition goal with 12:10 left in the final period to trim the gap down to 12-9. The Generals answered with two straight tallies, pushing the lead back to 14-9 with 6:43 to go.
- Kennedy scored again at the 4:24 mark, and Kammerman made it 14-11 with 2:41 to play. But W&L held the Maroons at bay down the stretch to finish the regular season unbeaten (9-0) in ODAC play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kennedy notched a hat trick to pace the Roanoke offense, while Cullen and Kammerman each tallied two goals and Docking finished with one goal and one assist.
- Taylor Lewis made eight of his 13 saves in the second half, including six stops in the fourth quarter alone.
- Elliott piled up a game-high seven points for W&L, finishing with five goals and two assists. Alex Brown recorded three goals, Hillis Burns posted two goals and two assists, and Nick De Cain registered 12 saves.
- The Generals held slight advantages in shots (51-47) and ground balls (28-22). W&L also won 17-of-29 faceoffs, including a 12-of-13 mark in the second half.

- The Maroons have wrapped up the regular season with a 13-4 overall record and a 7-2 mark in conference play. Roanoke will await the seedings for the ODAC Tournament, which will be announced after the final round of conference games on Saturday.
