Lynchburg Clips Maroons in Top 20 ODAC Showdown

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Lynchburg 18, Roanoke 15
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story: The 16th-ranked Hornets used a key fourth-quarter run to outpace No. 20 Roanoke in a key conference matchup at Kerr Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lynchburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half of the opening quarter, getting two goals each from Jake Rust and Spencer Vandenberg during that stretch. Wyatt Whitlow and Luke Kammerman got the Maroons on the board, but back-to-back Hornet goals pushed the margin to 7-2 early in the second period.
  • Roanoke responded by reeling off three consecutive markers, trimming the deficit to 7-5 on a Quinn Evans goal at the 8:16 mark of the second.
  • Lynchburg stretched its lead to 9-6 before the Maroons made a big push to close the half. Taylor Lewis started the charge, as the senior goalie ventured across the opposite restraining line and buried his first career goal with 3:42 remaining in the second quarter. Noah Elazar added another transition goal, and Luca Docking knotted things up at 9-9 with just nine seconds left before the break.
  • The teams traded scores throughout the third quarter. Roanoke took its first lead of the game (12-11) on a goal from Sean Kennedy with 5:40 to play, but Finn Schmidt tied it up on the ensuing Hornet possession.
  • The Maroons went ahead 13-12 on Julian Kammerman's extra-man goal 25 seconds into the fourth quarter. But the Hornets took control from there, notching five of the next six scores and assuming a 17-14 advantage on another Schmidt goal with 3:36 left.
  • Docking scored at the 3:06 mark to make it 17-15, and Jake Brader won the ensuing faceoff. But Lynchburg goalie Tyler Hadley made a key save on Docking, and Dylan Wolfe iced the game at the other end on a goal with just 1:08 remaining.
