Roanoke Softball Sweeps Shenandoah in ODAC thriller

Maroons extend winning streak to seven

The DH Facts:

The Short story: It came down to the wire, but the Roanoke College softball team swept Shenandoah University Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader 10-4 and 6-5.

The Maroons trailed 5-1 in the sixth inning of the second game but used a five-run inning to complete the sweep.  

How it happened:
*The Maroons took a big lead early in the first game, scoring four in the second and one each in the third and four to go ahead 6-0.
*After the Hornets cut the lead to 6-2 in the fifth, Roanoke put the game out of reach with two runs each in the sixth and seventh.
*Roanoke took advantage of a Hornet error to go ahead 1-0 in the third frame of game two, but the hosts tied it with one run in the fourth and took a 5-1 edge after a four-run fifth inning.
*Shenandoah was charged with three errors in the decisive sixth inning, and the Maroons capitalized with doubles from Lauren Hoffman and Katelyn Craghead.
*Maggie McCray struck out the side in the sixth and the first two batters of the seventh before forcing a popout to end the game.   

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Heather McQueeney was 2-3 with a triple and two RBI.
*Madison Courts went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.
*Kate Houle had a hit and a walk.
*Lindsay Gedro was efficient in the circle, walking none in six innings with six hits and two earned runs and two strikeouts.
*Rachael Blumenschine was 2-2 with a double and two runs scored for Shenandoah.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Houle was 2-4 with a triple and four Maroons doubled.
*McCray earned the win, retiring all seven batters she faced with six strikeouts.

Up Next:
*The Maroons (17-7/9-1) travel to the University of Lynchburg Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. for another ODAC doubleheader.
