Roanoke Men’s Lacrosse Sprints to ODAC Win over Marlins

The Short Story: The 20th-ranked Maroons coasted to a 25-3 conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan on the road on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wyatt Whitlow and Sean Kennedy notched two goals apiece as Roanoke outscored the Marlins 7-0 in the first quarter. Clayton Bewick made it 8-0 early in the second before Virginia Wesleyan finally got on the board, but the Maroons would stretch their lead to 13-1 by halftime.
  • RC widened the gap even more by posting the first seven goals of the second half, assuming a 20-1 advantage on a marker from Griffin Dabbs at the 5:38 mark of the third quarter.
  • Roanoke led 22-2 after three periods, tacking on three more scores in the final frame to record the 25-3 final.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Whitlow led the way with eight points, finishing with six goals and two assists. Luca Docking added six points on two goals and four assists, while Quinn Evans notched two goals and two helpers and Kennedy bagged a hat trick.
  • Bewick recorded two goals and one assist, with Noah Goad and DJ Nolan also chipping in two goals apiece. Noah Bell, Patrick Cullen and Luke Kammerman each registered one goal and one assist, and Aidan Landgraf had two assists.
  • The Maroons won 25-of-32 faceoffs in the game, getting a 14-of-17 performance from Jake Brader and a 7-of-9 mark from Brooks Klyver.
  • Taylor Lewis saved five of the six shots that he faced during a 38:22 stint between the pipes. Brader scooped up a game-high eight ground balls, and Matt Jahries had five caused turnovers.
  • Daniel Auxier, Parker Lucas and Nick Owens scored one goal apiece for the Marlins.
  • The Maroons posted advantages of 74-20 in shots and 53-31 in ground balls. Roanoke also forced 32 VWU turnovers.
