Maroons Rally Past St. John Fisher in 2OT Thriller

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 10, St. John Fisher 9
Location: Clearwater, Fla.

The Short Story: The No. 16 Roanoke women's lacrosse team overcame a 3-goal deficit late in the fourth quarter, going on to capture a double-overtime win over the 19th-ranked Cardinals on a neutral field in Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. John Fisher jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Zoe Blair got the Maroons on the board with 13:10 remaining in the second period.
  • The teams traded scores for the rest of the half, and a marker from Maddie McDonald at the 5:29 mark pulled RC to within 5-3. But Farrah Zalla's player-up goal with 18 seconds to play gave the Cardinals a 6-3 halftime edge.
  • St. John Fisher outshot the Maroons 15-7 in the first half, but seven saves from Kyleigh Chickering kept RC within striking distance.
  • The teams continued to alternate scores after the break. A pair of Libby Bowman tallies sandwiched around a goal from the Cardinals' Sydney Carpenter made it a 7-5 game entering the final frame of regulation.
  • Carpenter pushed the St. John Fisher advantage to 9-6 with 7:13 to play. But the Maroons rallied down the stretch, getting two goals from Kate Loughran along with a Tiernan Connor score. Loughran's second marker tied things up at 9-9 with 2:05 to play, and the game would head to overtime.
  • Each team generated one shot on goal across the first pair of extra 3-minute periods. Chickering recorded a save with 0:54 to go in the second half of OT, leading to a chance at the other end, but Bowman was denied by Kaylee Gadol in the closing seconds.
  • Chickering produced another save on St. John Fisher's first possession in double overtime. This time, the Maroons made good on their opportunity, as Nicole Harrison scored from a Grace Koutouzis assist to provide the game-winner with 1:20 left in the period.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Kyleigh Chickering finished with 12 saves in the game, registering a .571 save percentage.
  • Loughran led the RC offense with four points (two goals and two assists), while Bowman tallied two goals and one assist. Blair finished with one goal and one helper, and the Maroons also got one score apiece from Connor, Harrison, McDonald, Tracey Benzing and Soria Ebert. Koutouzis chipped in two assists.

  • Carpenter paced St. John Fisher with three goals, four caused turnovers and seven draw controls. Emma Biel and Hanna Kumpf each posted one goal and one assist, while Maddie Lowney notched six caused turnovers and five ground balls.
