Roanoke Baseball sweeps Centenary in home doubleheader

The short story:
The Roanoke College baseball team got back in the winning column Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Centenary University, 5-3 in game one and 17-3 in game two. Both contests were seven innings.

How it happened:
*Centenary scored in the top of the first in the opener, but Roanoke answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Runs scored on an error, a Tucker Schiavoni single and a bases loaded walk from Trevor Moore.
*The Cyclones plated two in the top of the second to tie the game and it remained 3-3 until the Maroons pushed two across in the bottom of the sixth. Corey Coogan hit a sacrifice fly and Jonny Wall came home on a balk.
*The visitors scored two in the first inning of the nightcap before the RC offense exploded for two runs in the first, five in the second, three in the fourth, six in the fifth and one in the sixth.    
 
Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Dylan Bonzon and Wall each went 2-3 with a walk.
*Gardner Meeks was the winning pitcher for Roanoke, hurling two scoreless innings of relief.
*Marty Lucibello was 4-4 for the Cyclones.   

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Jon Rossi tossed a complete game in the finale, settling down after the first inning to throw six scoreless frames.
*Coogan hit a solo home run and walked twice.
*Bonzon was 3-5 with a double and three runs scored.
*Hayden Giordano went 2-4 with a double, a triple and six RBI.
*Hunter von Zelowitz was 2-3 with a walk and scored twice.

Next Time:
Roanoke (4-8) is scheduled to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday at home in a doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite University starting at noon.
