The Short Story: The Roanoke women's tennis team suffered a pair of narrow defeats in away non-conference matches on Friday.
MARYVILLE 5, ROANOKE 4
- The Scots took a 2-1 lead through doubles play. Halle Fernstrum and Bella Gustafson cruised to an 8-1 victory over Katelyn Cook and Elizabeth Shwaiko at the No. 1 spot, but Maryville claimed the other two matches: Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith over Lia Streibich and Julia Bassett by an 8-4 count at No. 2, and Mandy Webb and Mia Brown against Morgan Tobey and Camryn Breedlove with an 8-2 final at No. 3.
- The teams then split the six singles matches, allowing the Scots to prevail overall. The Maroons took the top two flights, with Streibich downing Shwaiko 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 and Fernstrum rolling past Cook 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. Breedlove also scored a win at No. 6, beating Webb 6-1, 7-5.
- Elsewhere, Brown defeated Gustafson 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3, Smith overcame Bassett 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4, and Diggs bested Tobey 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 as the Scots improved to 8-5 overall.
JOHNSON 4, ROANOKE 3
- In a match played under best-of-7 rules, the Royals secured the doubles point by winning two of the three contests. Paola Testa and Isabella Stigall beat Fernstrum and Gustafson 6-4 at No. 1, while Caroline Rhoton and Clare Torres dispatched Breedlove and Sidney Wright 6-3 at No. 3. The Maroons were victorious at No. 2, with Bassett and Streibich securing a 6-1 win over Caitlyn Bowling and Lauren Murray.
- The teams each won three singles matches, giving Johnson the overall victory. For Roanoke, Streibich rallied past Testa 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 1, Bassett survived Murray 6-0, 3-6, 12-10 at No. 3, and Wright defeated Torres 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
- The Royals claimed victories at No. 2, where Rhoton defeated Fernstrum 6-4, 6-4; at No. 4, with Stigall knocking off Breedlove 6-4, 6-2; and at No. 5, where Bowling beat Maddie Morrell 6-3, 6-0.
- The Maroons' overall record now sits at 6-7.
