HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kate Loughran and Libby Bowman scored early to give Roanoke a 2-0 advantage. But the Eagles responded with four straight goals, assuming a 4-2 lead on a marker from Victoria Mueller with 5:28 left in the first quarter.
- Although Grace Koutouzis broke the UMW run with 33 seconds left in the period, the Eagles would maintain the lead throughout the second stanza. A Caeley Terapane goal stretched the margin to 8-5 with 4:41 left, but Maddie McDonald would trim it down to two (8-6) on a goal with 2:49 to play. That score held until halftime.
- Kyleigh Chickering made six saves after the break as the Roanoke defense kept the Eagles off the scoreboard for the first 28-plus minutes of the second half.
- At the other end of the field, the Maroons gradually wore down the UMW defense. Bowman scored with 11:38 to play in the third period to make it 8-7, and Sydney Harrison tied the game with 3:12 remaining in the frame.
- Loughran put Roanoke in front for good off of a Harrison assist with 6:11 to play in the fourth quarter, and Tracey Benzing made it 10-8 at the 3:39 mark.
- Katie Blair finally broke the Eagles' drought with just 1:15 to play, pulling UMW to within 10-9. Mary Washington won the ensuing draw and went player-up on a Roanoke green card, but Chickering raced out of the goal circle to force a key turnover in the final seconds of the game as the Maroons held on for their third straight win in the series.
