Maroons Beat No. 24 Shenandoah in ODAC Opener

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 13, Shenandoah 8
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story: The 17th-ranked Roanoke women's lacrosse team collected a 13-8 victory over the Hornets in the first conference game of the season at Kerr Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emily Lerch and Ainsley Buckner scored to put Shenandoah ahead 2-0 early on. But the Maroons answered with four straight markers, including two from Libby Bowman, to assume a 4-2 advantage by the 1:12 mark of the first quarter. RC would not relinquish its lead for the rest of the game.
  • Lerch pulled SU back to within one (4-3) with 59 seconds to play, but that would prove to be the Hornets' last marker for over 25 minutes of game time.
  • Bowman, Maddie McDonald and Kate Loughran scored in the second quarter to give the Maroons a 7-3 halftime cushion. Loughran bagged another goal with 12:42 remaining in the third period to make it 8-3.
  • Madison Re finally broke the Shenandoah drought later in the quarter, scoring twice in the final 4:11 to pull the Hornets to within 8-5.
  • Grace Koutouzis opened the final frame with back-to-back free-position goals to push Roanoke's lead to 10-5. The Hornets would score three of the next four goals, trimming the margin down to 11-8 on a player-up marker from Gabriella Raspanti with 3:23 left.
  • But the Maroons had the answer, getting a couple of key defensive stops down the stretch and adding insurance goals from McDonald and Koutouzis in the final 1:35.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Koutouzis led all scorers with six points, notching four goals and two assists. Loughran totaled three goals and one helper, and Bowman also recorded a hat trick.
  • Kyleigh Chickering made a season-high 14 stops in goal, totaling seven saves in each half to keep the Hornets' attack at bay.
  • McDonald posted two goals and eight draw controls as Roanoke held a 14-11 advantage on the circle. Keely Dent and Natalie Mason each recorded a pair of caused turnovers for the RC defense.
  • Re paced Shenandoah with three goals and one assist. Lerch finished with two goals, one assist and three caused turnovers, and Buckner also scored twice. Madison Perry played the full game in goal and registered 13 saves.
  • The matchup was the first contested ODAC game of the season for both teams. The Maroons and the Hornets have both been awarded administrative forfeit victories over Randolph for games that were slated to take place later in the season.
UP NEXT
  • The Maroons welcome in Mary Washington for a non-conference game on Wednesday evening, with opening draw slated for 6 p.m.
