Maroons Ride Big 1st Half to Win Over No. 23 Denison

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 14, Denison 7
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story: The 17th-ranked Roanoke women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-goal halftime lead and cruised past the Big Red 14-7 at Kerr Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Bridget Sheehy put Denison ahead 1-0 in the opening minute of the contest, the Maroons reeled off the final five goals of the first quarter. Libby Bowman netted RC's first three markers, while Kate Loughran and Grace Koutouzis also scored as the Maroons built up a 5-1 advantage.
  • Maddie Morrell broke the Roanoke run with a goal just 54 seconds into the second period, but the Maroons answered with a 4-0 spurt. Koutouzis scored twice during that stretch as RC extended its lead to 9-2 by halftime.
  • Roanoke proceeded to bag the first four goals of the third quarter, including back-to-back markers from Tracey Benzing. Bowman's fifth goal of the afternoon made it 13-2 with 8:10 remaining, and RC would lead 14-3 by the end of the period.
  • Denison outscored the Maroons 4-0 in the final frame, but three of those goals came in the final 2:07 with RC still firmly in control of the outcome.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Koutouzis racked up seven points (three goals and four assists), tying the career-high that she set in a road win over the Big Red last year. Bowman finished the day with five goals.
  • Benzing contributed two markers, and Roanoke also got a goal apiece from Kate Loughran, Maddie McDonald, Sydney Harrison and Zoe Blair.
  • Kyleigh Chickering made six saves with just four goals allowed in 54:30 of action. Addison Schmidt and Natalie Mason each posted three caused turnovers, and Schmidt also led the Maroons with three ground balls.
  • RC held a 16-9 advantage on the draw circle, led by eight draw controls for Sophia Chickering.
