Roanoke Drops Tight Game to 5th-Ranked Red Devils

THE GAME FACTS

The Short Story: The Maroons lost a back-and-forth contest to No. 5 Dickinson on a neutral field at the Bullis School on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams traded scores in the opening minutes of the contest, but Roanoke used a 3-goal run to go ahead 5-2 on a marker from Wyatt Whitlow with 5:41 remaining in the first period. The Maroons led 5-3 by the end of the frame.
  • The Red Devils notched the first three goals of the second quarter, assuming a 6-5 edge on Matt Thurston's tally at the 11:48 mark. The teams went score-for-score down the stretch in the first half, and Dickinson led 8-7 at the break.
  • Jay Frye knotted things up for the Maroons just 10 seconds into the third period. The Red Devils responded by grabbing three of the next four goals to build an 11-9 margin by the end of the frame.
  • Sean Kennedy, Luke Kammerman and Whitlow scored in short order early in the fourth period, putting Roanoke ahead 12-11 with 10:11 to play.
  • But Dickinson countered with a decisive 4-goal spurt, including back-to-back man-up goals that made it 15-12 with just 2:52 left. Julian Kammerman pulled a goal back for the Maroons with 2:15 remaining, but RC would come no closer.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Whitlow led the Maroons with four goals. Luke Kammerman notched three goals and one assist, and Julian Kammerman had two goals and one helper.
  • Frye, Kennedy, Noah Bell and Clayton Bewick chipped in one goal apiece.
  • Alex Feuer logged all 60 minutes in goal and recorded 14 saves.
  • Owen Porter paced the Red Devils with four goals. Liam Carney and Ethan Gass each totaled two goals and one assist, while Skyler Schluter registered one goal and two assists. Patrick Scarborough matched Feuer with 14 stops between the pipes.
  • Dickinson held a 47-37 advantage in shots and a 41-31 edge in ground balls. The Red Devils also won 19-of-31 faceoffs.

  • The Maroons will lock up with Wesleyan at the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in Sparks, Md. on Sunday, March 10. First faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
