Quakers Fend Off Maroons in ODAC Clash

The Short Story: The Quakers made a big offensive push in the second half and held off the Maroons down the stretch for an ODAC victory at the Cregger Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Guilford jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage, with all seven points coming from Carleigh Perry. The Quakers would lead by 10 points later in the period, and they closed the frame ahead 22-14.
  • Roanoke battled back in the second quarter, eventually knotting the score at 30-30 on a Rose Sande 3-pointer with 3:21 to play. Madison Nereu then scored late to give the Maroons a 32-30 halftime edge. Sande notched 15 points in the first half, while Nereu chipped in six markers in the second quarter.
  • The Quakers caught fire from downtown in the third period, burying eight 3-pointers in the stanza and outscoring Roanoke 30-23. Still, the Maroons were able to hang around, tying the score at 49-49 on a Lauren Keel bucket with 2:33 to go and trailing by just one (54-53) with one minute remaining.
  • Back-to-back triples from Briahna Scott and Perry made it 60-53 before Keel sliced the lead to 60-55 on a pair of free throws in the closing seconds of the period.
  • Guilford netted the first six points of the final quarter, and the Quakers held the Maroons off the scoreboard until Kate Littlejohn connected on a jumper that made it 66-57 at the 6:28 mark. Roanoke whittled the margin down to six on two occasions down the stretch, but could come no closer.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sande tied for the game-high with 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Keel scored 15 of her 18 points after halftime, and she also tallied nine rebounds and four assists.
  • Nereu posted a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Littlejohn added 13 points, and Mariah Cain totaled seven points and six assists.
  • Courtney McMillan led Guilford with 20 points and seven boards. Perry notched 17 points, Ashtyn Zeigler scored 15, and Scott added 10 markers.
  • The Quakers connected on 13-of-30 attempts (43.3 percent) from beyond the arc and outrebounded Roanoke 51-44. They also scored 25 points off of 25 Maroon turnovers.
