Roanoke Claims Key Road Win over Shenandoah

THE GAME FACTS

The Short Story: The Maroons used a pair of critical fourth-quarter runs to secure an 11-point victory over the Hornets in ODAC women's hoops action.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A back-and-forth opening period saw the lead change hands four times, and it ended with the score knotted at 17-17. Lauren Keel tallied nine points in the first quarter, and a late 3-pointer from Maggie Houpt evened the score for the Maroons.
  • Roanoke started the second stanza with a 12-4 stretch, assuming a 29-21 advantage on a triple from Kate Littlejohn at the 4:37 mark. The Maroons would head into halftime up 33-28.
  • Shenandoah opened the second half on an 8-0 spurt, taking a 36-33 lead on a Maddie Kimble bucket with 7:25 to go. The teams traded blows for the remainder of the third period, which featured two ties and four additional lead changes. The Hornets held a slim 46-45 edge heading into the final 10-minute set.
  • Spurred by two Peyton Kirchner 3-pointers and a pair of hoops from Keel, the Maroons kicked off the final frame with a 12-3 run that put them ahead 57-49 with 4:49 to play.
  • Shenandoah battled back to within three (57-54) with 3:29 left, but Roanoke answered with a 9-2 run. Two Littlejohn foul shots gave the Maroons an insurmountable double-digit lead (66-56) with just 59 seconds to go.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Keel scored 21 points to pace Roanoke, shooting 9-of-14 from the floor while also tallying six rebounds and four assists.
  • Madison Nereu posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double and dished out a game-high five assists. Littlejohn also totaled 14 points.
  • Kirchner knocked down three treys, all in the fourth quarter, to finish with nine points, and Parker Childress also had nine markers.
  • The Hornets' Terese Greene led all scorers with 23 points, and she added seven rebounds and five steals. Shawnise Campbell joined her in double figures with 10 points and eight boards.
  • Roanoke limited Shenandoah to 29.2 percent shooting (21-of-72) from the field, including a 3-of-17 mark across the final 10 minutes.
