Kammerman Breaks Assist Record as Roanoke Holds Off Grove City

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 17, Grove City 14
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story: Luke Kammerman snapped the program's career assist record, and the Maroons claimed a 17-14 win over the Wolverines on a rainy and blustery afternoon at Kerr Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grove City used an early 4-goal run, including three markers from James Petrolle, to take a 4-1 lead with 5:53 to go in the first quarter. But Roanoke countered with a 4-0 spurt of its own, assuming a 5-4 advantage on a Luca Docking tally in the closing seconds of the frame.
  • While the Maroons wouldn't trail again for the rest of the contest, they had trouble gaining separation from the Wolverines. Wyatt Whitlow gave RC a 9-7 lead at the 7:34 mark of the second period, but Matt Blythe's goal for Grove City with 5:00 to go made it a 9-8 scoreline, which stood until halftime.
  • Blythe pulled the Wolverines even just 47 seconds into the second half. Roanoke answered with another 4-0 stretch, going up 13-9 on a goal from Noah Bell with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Grove City would net five of the game's next seven goals, closing to within one twice – including at 15-14 on a Zachary Hougan goal with 4:59 to play.
  • But the Maroons again had the answer, as Luke Kammerman pushed the lead back to 16-14 with 2:09 left. After a key defensive stop in the final minute, Kammerman provided an exclamation point on a goal as time expired.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Luke Kammerman totaled a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. In the process, he broke Roanoke Hall of Famer Richard Graham '80's career assist record of 141. Kammerman now has 144 assists and 270 total points in 54 games.

  • Julian Kammerman added one goal and three assists, and Sean Kennedy chipped in one goal and one helper.
