Roanoke Men’s Lacrosse Slips Past Mary Washington

THE GAME FACTS

The Short Story: The Maroons shut out the Eagles in the fourth quarter to claim a hard-fought win in a back-and-forth game in Fredericksburg.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Roanoke scored the opening two goals of the game, as Clayton Bewick struck first and then assisted Luke Kammerman, who made it 2-0 with 8:56 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Ethan Castleman scored twice, including a man-up goal, to pull Mary Washington even with 6:28 to play. Luca Docking then put the Maroons in front 3-2 on a marker with 1:03 left in the stanza.
  • Roanoke held on to the lead for most of the second quarter, going ahead 5-3 on an extra-man tally from Docking at the 3:37 mark. But the Eagles battled back to tie things up at 5-5 on a goal from Dave Votapek in the closing seconds of the half.
  • For most of the third period, the teams matched each other score for score. Jackson Popeck leveled the game at 8-8 with 5:49 to play, and he then gave the Eagles their first lead (9-8) in the final minute of the frame.
  • But the Roanoke defense stepped up in the fourth period, holding Mary Washington off the scoreboard for the last 15:44 of game time. Kammerman knotted the score at 9-9 with 8:21 to go, and Quinn Evans provided the winning marker from a Docking assist at the 2:46 mark.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Kammerman finished with a game-high five points to helm the Maroons' attack, totaling four goals and one assist.
  • Bewick, Docking and Wyatt Whitlow notched three points apiece. Docking had two goals and one helper, while Bewick and Whitlow each recorded one goal and two assists.
  • Alex Feuer played the full 60 minutes in goal and tallied 13 saves. Docking and Bryson Miller led the ground ball count for Roanoke with five apiece.
  • Popeck paced the Eagles with three goals, and Votapek totaled two goals and one assist. Wyatt Martin recorded 15 saves.
  • Mary Washington outshot the Maroons 54-35, but Roanoke held a 25-22 edge in attempts on goal. The Eagles generated a slim 35-30 advantage in ground balls and won 15-of-23 faceoffs.
