Maroons Roll Past SVU in Men’s Lax Opener

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 21, Southern Virginia 9
Location: Buena Vista, Va.

The Short Story: The Roanoke men's lacrosse team cruised to a 21-9 road victory over Southern Virginia in its first regular-season game of 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a pair of early goals from the Knights' Gabe King put the home side ahead 1-0 and 2-1, the Maroons rallied to bag the final four markers of the opening frame. Wyatt Whitlow scored twice in the period, and a goal from Julian Kammerman with 58 seconds left put Roanoke ahead 5-2.
  • SVU closed to within 5-3 just 28 seconds into the second quarter, but the Maroons reeled off six unanswered tallies – each from a different player – to push the margin to 11-3. Roanoke held an 11-4 edge at halftime.
  • The Knights trimmed the deficit to 12-6 with 9:29 to play in the third, but a 3-1 stretch for the Maroons – with all three markers coming from Luca Docking – stretched the lead to 15-7 by the end of the quarter.
  • Roanoke then grabbed the first four goals of the fourth quarter, pulling away for the 12-goal victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Docking racked up nine points on four goals and five assists to pace the Maroons' offense. Whitlow followed closed behind with five goals and two helpers for a total of seven points.
