Second half push not enough for Maroons against RMC

ASHLAND, Va. - Despite their second half efforts, the Roanoke College women's basketball team couldn't find enough to overcome the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets in conference play on Saturday.

How It Happened 

  • RMC got out to a fast start but Roanoke was able to cut the lead to three. The Yellow Jackets, however, started to pull away after that. The score going into the second was 21-8. 

  • Randolph-Macon kept their momentum in the second quarter to widen the gap and make the halftime score 51-19. 

  • The Maroons stepped it up on both ends of the court in the third, not allowing points in the run of play until there was less than four minutes left in the quarter. RC outscored the Yellow Jackets 20-7 in the quarter to cut the deficit to 58-39. 

  • It was a tight fourth quarter that saw RMC grab the edge 16-15 to bring the final to 74-54. 
       

Notes and Notables 

  • The Maroons outscored Randolph-Macon 35-23 in the second half.  

  • Ashley Fowler shot .667 on the day, including going 3-4 from behind the three-point line, to tie for the lead in points with 15. 

  • Mariah Cain had a career high of 15 points to co-lead the team with Fowler. 

  • Paige Breuer also crossed double digit points with 11. She went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line on the afternoon. 

  • Cain and Fowler also co-led the squad in rebounds with seven apiece. 

  • Fowler and Ingrid Morales topped the team in steals with two each. 

  • Cain, Fowler, and Nadia Snesarev all registered a leading two assists each.

Roanoke returns home after a three-week road stretch next Saturday (Dec. 14) for a 2:00 pm non-conference game against Methodist.
