Maroons overcome by NC Wesleyan's second half surge

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Roanoke College women's basketball team couldn't survive the second half surge of North Carolina Wesleyan, falling to the Battling Bishops 81-65 on Monday night.

How It Happened 

  • NC Wesleyan had the early edge going up 11-2 after Roanoke scored the first points of the game. RC worked their way back in before the end of the quarter to make it just a 18-17 edge in favor of the Battling Bishops. 

  • The second quarter was back and forth but the Maroons put in a surge with a minute left in the half to take a 42-37 lead at the break. 

  • NC Wesleyan took charge in the third, going on an unanswered 14 point run in the third to take hold of the lead, 62-54. 

  • After pulling away in the third, the Battling Bishops held strong in the fourth to take the game. 

Notes and Notables 

  • All of the Maroons' starting lineup made their first career start for Roanoke. 

  • Sophomore Alicea Farmer topped the team in rebounds with seven. 

  • Mariah Cain was the only Maroon to register multiple assists in the game with her six helpers. 

  • All but two of the RC players that saw minutes recorded a steal in the game with Breuer leading the team in the category at four. 

  • Roanoke had the advantage in three pointers, 6-2, and free throws 11-9, but NC Wesleyan held the advantage in field goals, 35-24.

RC is set to host the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic this weekend (Nov. 16-17) in the Cregger Center. The squad opens the weekend against Wilkes University on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm.
