Keyes and Vernarelli lift field hockey above Southern Virginia

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College field hockey squad finished out their non-conference slate on a high with an 8-1 win over Southern Virginia on Thursday night.

How It Happened 

  • Grace Vernarelli  took charge and opened the scoring within the first minute. 

  • Lindsey Keyes then scored twice in the next six minutes to put the Maroons up 3-0. 

  • Southern Virginia scored their lone goal in the 21st minute off a penalty stroke. 

  • Keyes picked up her hat trick off a pass from Tess Taloumis in the third period. 

  • Elyse Cosgrave then lifted a goal into the back of the net off a dish from Vernarelli. 

  • Keyes tallied her fourth goal before Vernarelli added two more to get a hat trick for herself to round out the scoring. 

Notes and Notables 

  • Four goals is a single game career high for Keyes and is the first time she has tallied more than two goals in a contest. 

  • Vernarelli recorded her second hat trick of the season on the night. It is the fourth time she has accomplished the feat in her career. 

  • Cosgrave scored her first goal of the season in the game. 

  • Maddy Holmes dished out the first assist of her Maroons career on the last goal of the night. 

  • Every Roanoke player saw action in the game. 

  • Madison Wingerter and Megan Keller split time in between the pipes. Wingerter made the only save of the game for the Maroons in the first half.

RC is set to begin conference play on Saturday as they take the trip across the state to Virginia Wesleyan for an 11:00 am contest in Virginia Beach.
