Ethan Graves caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from freshman
Blake Moore with just eight seconds remaining to lift the Roanoke College football team to a 35-28 victory Sunday over Fork Union Military Academy. Â
After FUMA tied the game at 28 all with 1:06 left, Graves made two leaping catches on the game-winning drive, the first a 22-yard grab to put the Maroons across midfield - and on the winning score to cap a seven-play, 65-yard drive. Â
The Maroons, 4-0 on the year, are competing this season as a club team before achieving full varsity status in 2025 and becoming a full member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
How it happened:
*After a scoreless first quarter, Moore found
Khamari Garner for a 22-yard touchdown. The Blue Devils put the next 19 points on the board to take a 19-7 lead in the third quarter.
*
Tyson Miller found the end zone on a 17-yard run and Garner hauled in a 63-yard bomb from Moore to cut the lead to 22-20 early in the fourth.
*Moore hit
Purcel Turner for a 39-yard score and following a successful two-point conversion, Roanoke led 28-22 with 5:32 on the game clock.
*FUMA tied the game at 28 on an eight-yard TD pass, but missed the extra point. Â
Inside the numbers:
*Moore finished 25-42 passing for 367 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
*Garner caught seven passes for 148 yards and two TDs, and
Jaden Davis had five receptions for 67 yards.
*
Charlie Davis made 16 tackles for Roanoke, with six for loss.
Isaac Rivera and
Tandom Smith each had 11 tackles and
Connor Pleasants had an interception.
*Jacob Smiley was 14-20 for the Blue Devils for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
*Both defenses were tough against the run, with RC finishing with 19 net yards rushing and FUMA only 57.
