Game Recap: Football |

Comeback falls just short for RC Football at Shenandoah

The Game Facts:
Scores: Shenandoah 30, Roanoke 24
Location: Winchester, Va. – Shentel Stadium

The Short story: A potential game-winning drive fell just short Saturday as the Roanoke College football team dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest at Shenandoah 30-24.

The Maroons trailed 30-17 with six minutes left in the game, but rallied to have a chance at victory in the closing seconds. Down six and facing a fourth and seven from the SU 14 with 31 seconds remaining, a potential touchdown pass fell incomplete as the RC receiver went down after contact with a defender.

How it happened:
*After SU opened the scoring with a field goal, a blocked punt set up good field position for the Maroons. Linwood Johnson found Jack Brotherton from four yards out for a touchdown but RC couldn't convert the extra point.
*The Hornets responded with back-to-back passing scores.
*Ethan Cyr dilled a 50-yard field goal just before the half and Shenandoah entered intermission ahead 17-9.
*Johnson connected with Cole Chizuk on a five-yard TD and hit Grey Deal on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 17 all midway through the third.
*Shenandoah posted two-straight touchdowns to assume a 30-17 lead with 8:59 on the game clock.
*Johnson led a seven-play, 63-yard drive in just 3:03, capped with a Trell Creasy four-yard touchdown run.
*The RC defense forced a quick three-and-out to give the Maroon offense the ball back with 3:37 left at their own 47.
*The Maroons drove to the SU 10, but a holding penalty set the final drive back and the Hornets were ultimately able to escape with the victory.

Inside the numbers:
*Johnson was 28-of-44 for 242 yards and two touchdowns.
*Grey Deal caught five passes for 60 yards and Chizuk hauled in six for 51 and a TD.
*Jerrett Shepherd carried the ball 12 times for 47 yards.
*JaePharoah Carpenter had nine tackles and forced a fumble.
*Ethan Mapstone made eight stops, recovered a fumble and had an interception. Josiah Moyer also had an interception.
*Mekhi Brown finished 16-25 for 189 yards and three scores for Shenandoah (4-2/2-1 ODAC).
