Late Surge Carries Roanoke Past Hollins

The Short Story: The Roanoke women's basketball team closed the game on a 21-3 run en route to claiming a 66-48 ODAC road win over Hollins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After five early lead changes and an 8-8 tie, the Maroons capped the first period with six straight points to grab a 14-8 advantage. Madison Nereu notched seven points in the opening frame, including the final four markers.
  • Roanoke's spurt spilled over into the second quarter, and Kate Littlejohn made it a 19-8 game on a bucket with 9:18 to go. After Hollins pulled to within two (22-20) at the 3:29 mark, the Maroons reeled off the final seven points of the stanza for a 29-20 lead at the break.
  • RC led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, only to see Hollins battle back to close the gap to 43-42 on a Sarah Morales jumper in the final seconds of the stanza.
  • Following a Rose Sande hoop to start the fourth period, Iyana Sigei then connected on a 3-pointer to knot the score at 45-45 with 8:32 remaining.
  • But the Maroons took over from there. Roanoke strung together 13 unanswered points, assuming a 58-45 lead on Nereu's bucket with 3:40 to go. That was part of an extended 21-3 stretch for the Maroons across the final 7:51 of game time.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sande paced Roanoke with 20 points, knocking down 8-of-15 shots from the floor. Nereu totaled 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists while logging 38 minutes on the court.
  • Littlejohn added 13 points and five assists off the bench. Mariah Cain contributed seven points, Parker Childress scored six, and Lauren Keel recorded five points and eight rebounds.
  • Morales tallied a game-high 21 points for Hollins, and Cabria Mutz registered 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • The Maroons shot 81.3 percent (13-of-16) at the charity stripe, including a 6-of-7 mark in the final period of play. The Roanoke defense held Hollins to 34.5 percent shooting from the floor (19-of-55) and a 4-of-16 clip from beyond the three-point arc.
  • The win was the third straight and the fifth in the last six outings for the Maroons.
