Roanoke Rides Big 1st Half to Victory over Averett

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 76, Averett 51
Location: Danville, Va.

The Short Story: The Maroons used an offensive outburst across the first two quarters to build up a large lead, going on to best the Cougars 76-51 on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Roanoke opened the contest on a 6-0 run, proceeding to extend that early advantage to 18-6 on a Kate Littlejohn 3-pointer with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Maroons then dropped 27 points in the second period, shooting 10-of-13 from the field in that stanza en route to crafting a 45-20 halftime edge. Parker Childress netted eight points in the quarter, while Mariah Cain notched all six of her markers in the frame.
  • Averett opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run, pulling within 15 (47-32) on Talia Prosper's triple at the 6:09 mark. But the Maroons countered with a quick 6-0 burst, and the Cougars wouldn't seriously threaten Roanoke's lead the rest of the way.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Childress and Rose Sande tied for the game-high with 14 points. Childress knocked down 4-of-5 attempts from three-point range and also grabbed six rebounds, while Sande reached her scoring total on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
  • Madison Nereu posted another strong floor game with 11 points, six boards, three assists and three blocks.
  • Cain finished with six points and four assists. Lauren Keel matched those totals and added six rebounds, while Littlejohn and Peyton Kirchner each chipped in six points.
  • Carmen Moore led the Cougars with 10 points, while Prosper and Jenkens Ervin contributed eight points apiece.
  • For the game, the Maroons shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the floor, 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from beyond the three-point arc and 80 percent (12-of-15) at the foul line. Averett finished 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field and just 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from downtown.
