Defense Powers Maroons to Victory over Eagles

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 59, Bridgewater 42
Location: Bridgewater, Va.

The Short Story: The Roanoke women's basketball team bottled up the Bridgewater offense, and Rose Sande led a balanced scoring effort with 16 points in a key ODAC road win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater held a 13-11 edge late in the first quarter, but the Maroons closed the period on a 7-0 run that featured five straight markers from Lauren Keel. RC led 18-13 after the opening frame, and the Maroons would not relinquish that advantage for the rest of the game.
  • Roanoke stretched the margin to 27-19 on a layup from Jada Steele with 3:58 remaining in the second quarter. The Eagles closed to within 27-25 inside the final minute, but a late 3-pointer from Jacquelyn DeJesse put the Maroons ahead 30-25 at halftime.
  • The teams traded scores for most of the third quarter. Steele tallied six points in the period, and RC exited with a 41-34 advantage.
  • Bridgewater pulled to within four (42-38) on a pair of Reagan Maynard free throws with 8:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Maroons countered with a 14-0 scoring run that put the game out of reach. DeJesse had five points and Sande added four during the spurt, which Kate Littlejohn capped off with two foul shots that made it 56-38 with 2:44 to go.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sande led all scorers with 16 points, marking her ninth straight double-figuring scoring game. She also snagged five rebounds.
