Maroons Honor Seniors With Win Over VA Wesleyan

THE GAME FACTS
Score:
 Roanoke 2, VA Wesleyan 1
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story:  It might have taken a while, but the Roanoke field hockey team were able to score twice in second half en route to a 2-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game, the Maroons honored its six seniors, Saige Bullock, Lindsey Keyes, Hope Keller, Madison Wingerter, Grace Vernarelli, and Madison Filson, for their contributions to the program over the past four seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half saw both teams play a defensive stance as neither team was able to find the back of the cage. Wingerter did not need to make a save in the first half in goal with all four Marlin shots wide of the goal
  • It did not take long into the third quarter for the Maroons to get on the scoreboard as Elyse Cosgrave sent a ball right in front of the goalie that Keyes deflected into the goal at 35:25, giving the Maroons the 1-0 lead.
  • After Keller was tripped near the goal, Roanoke was given a penalty corner. Tess Taloumis inserted the ball where Vernarelli tapped the stop before Keller fired a shot through traffic that found the back of the cage and the 2-0 lead at 48:35.
  • The Marlins scored their lone goal at 57:23 to pull within just one, but the Maroon defense once again held strong as Roanoke secured the 2-1 ODAC win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The win was the sixth in a row in the series, dating back to 2017. Overall the Maroons are 14-10 all time against the Marlins.
