Maroons Win Fourth in a Row With 3-2 Win Over Shenandoah

The Short Story:  Hitting the road after three-straight games at home, the Roanoke women's volleyball team continued its winning ways with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Shenandoah Hornets in Winchester on Friday evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early back to back points in the first set led to both teams going on small runs as the Hornets led 18-15. Four straight gave Roanoke the lead back at 19-18, but a 7-1 run would close out the first set for the home team, 25-20.
  • Trialing only once in the set at 2-1, the Maroons snagged the lead and led 14-9 midway through the set. They extended it to 19-13, eight points later, and pushed it even further at 23-16. Back and forth points was in favor of Roanoke with the 25-18 set two win.
  • Set three the Maroons lead through most of the set until SU took an 18-17 lead late. The teams traded two-point stretches with the Hornets claiming four of the final points to take the set 25-22 and the match lead 2-1.
  • The early portion of the fourth set saw Roanoke keep a lead before the Hornets maintained one through the middle portion. With the scored tied up at 17-17, the Maroons won eight of the final nine points of the set, including a five-point run to level the match at 2-2.
  • The deciding set saw the home team jump out to a 5-1 advantage. A 4-1 run brought Roanoke back within one at 6-5. SU pushed their lead back to two points at 9-7 before things turned for the better of the Maroons. A three-point run gave the Maroons the lead for the first time in the set before the score was leveled at 11-11. Two more Roanoke points forced a Hornet timeout but the Maroons got a set point at 14-11, before finishing the come-from-behind win 15-12.
