Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Maroons Knock Off Washington and Lee With 3-2 Win in Lexington

THE GAME FACTS
Score:
Roanoke 3, Washington and Lee 2
Location: Lexington, Va.

The Short Story:  With less than two minutes left in the game, the Roanoke men's soccer team saw two quick passes to Girom Affolter turn into a game-winning goal as the Maroons come from behind and secure the 3-2 win over Washington and Lee on Wednesday evening in Lexington.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams flexed their offensive muscles early with the Maroons taking a corner kick in the third minute with the Generals knocking the ball out of the box, but Alex Lopacinski short kicked lobbed the ball back into Jonathan Marklund who knocked the ball back to Michael Ramsey to two-touched shot it before a defender could reach him for the goal, giving the Maroons the super early, 1-0 lead.
  • The Generals responded just over a minute later tying the game at 1-1.
  • W&L would then take the lead in the 18th minute, 2-1, a score they kept going into halftime.
  • The second half was much more in favor of the Maroons with Slate Danforth taking a pass from Affolter in the 61st minute and secure the goal, again tying the score at 2-2.
  • As it looked like the game might end in a 2-2 draw, Kyle Butcher and Florin Wyss passed the ball up to Affolter with just 1:45 left in the contest for the game-winning goal as the Maroon kept the ball away from their goal and held on for the 3-2 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Luca Gustafson picked up his third win in goal for the Maroons, playing all 90 minutes, making four saves.
