The Short Story:Â The Roanoke men's soccer team gave special recognition to its 11 seniors prior to the start of the game, but the Hornets of Lynchburg used a pair of second half goals to get the 3-1 win over the Maroons Saturday evening. The 11 seniors honored were Jake Berecz, Dylan Berk, Nathan Carey, Al Cavagnaro, Jordan Fiorani, Luca Gustafson, Gabriel Hendi, Alex Lopacinski, Evan McIntyre, Till Schumacher, and Zac White.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lynchburg was first to get on the board in the 16th minute with a goal played left to right in front of Roanoke goalkeeper Gustafson, giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
- The Maroons answered on a free kick by Berk at 37:53 with a shot outside the box, over the row of defenders and into the top left corner of the goal, tying the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
- It took over 20 minutes in the second half before Lynchburg was able to get their second goal in the 67th minute before adding an insurance goal in the 74th minute to provide for the final 3-1 Hornet win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Both teams took seven shots in the contest, but Lynchburg took four in the first and three in the second half while the Maroons took all seven in the first 45 minutes.Â
- The Maroons had six players play every minute of the game against the Hornets.Â
