Field Hockey Knocks Off Meredith in Mid-Week Action

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 6, Meredith 1
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story:  The stat sheet for the Roanoke field hockey team was all Maroons as they picked up a 6-1 win over visiting Meredith on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It did not take long for the Maroons to get on the scoreboard as Saige Bullock took an inside pass from Carsyn Poppa at 4:54 for the 1-0 lead.
  • The goal was part of a hat trick for Bullock who scored the game-winner at 16:47 off a pass from Grace Vernarelli and a third goal at 24:11 off a pass from Isa Scheele.
  • An unassisted goal by Tess Taloumis at 24:56 put the Maroons ahead 4-0 going into halftime. 
  • Poppa assisted on a second on the day when a pass to a diving Vernarelli went to the opposite corner from the goalkeeper to give the Maroons a 5-0 advantage
  • Abby McCusker would sent a ball to Hope Keller at 48:11 from nearly the top of the arc for the 6-0 lead.
  • The lone Avenging Angels goal was scored at 53:56, it was the lone shot of the game for Meredith.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Maroons led in shots 27-1 and shots on goal 20-1. Roanoke also had the advantage in penalty corners 18-4.
  • Madison Wingerter played all 60 minutes in cage and picked up her second win of the season.

UP NEXT

  • Roanoke is on the road this Saturday, Sept. 16 when they play a contest at Hood. Game time with the Blazers in Frederick, Md. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
