Maroons Fall in Home Opener to Mary Washington

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Mary Washington 3, Roanoke 0

The Short Story:  Defense was the name of the game for most of the contest before the Roanoke field hockey team fell to Mary Washington in their season opener at home. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles score in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Maroons. 
  • Roanoke's defense then held UMW scoreless until the fourth quarter when the Eagles scored a pair of goals to pull away for the win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Grace Vernarelli led the Maroons with four shots including one on goal.
  • Madison Wingerter played all 60 minutes in cage and made four saves against Mary Washington.

UP NEXT

  • Roanoke will play their first road game of the season on Saturday, September 9 at Centre in Kentucky. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
