The Short Story:Â A big third quarter propelled the Roanoke women's basketball team to a 60-52 win over Lynchburg on Wednesday evening in Hill City. The Maroons evened their ODAC record at 1-1 with the victory..
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The team traded points and leads early in the first quarter with the score tied at 8-8 on a Kate Littlejohn three-pointer with 6:19 on the clock. Lynchburg responded with three consecutive three-pointers to take a 17-8 lead with 2:33 remaining in the quarter. Littlejohn made another three with 14 seconds left as the Hornets had a 20-14 lead going into the second quarter.
- Lynchburg extended their advantage to 12 with 8:37 before halftime and had a 10 point lead (31-21) with 5:39 showing on the clock. The Roanoke defense made its presence felt, holding the host Hornets scoreless until halftime while the offense cut the Lynchburg lead down to just two at the break, 31-29.
- The start of the second half was very much like the end of the first as the Maroons would take their first lead since 9:18 in the first quarter and extend it to nine with 4:04 left in the quarter. Lynchburg would finally score another point on a made free throw with 2:59 left in the period, ending a 12 minute, 20 second scoring draught. Roanoke pushed their lead up to 10 twice before the end of the quarter before taking a 44-26 lead into the final stanza.
- The fourth quarter played played even as both teams scored 16 points as the Maroons held on to their eight-point lead for the 60-52 win over the Hornets.Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Rose Sande and Littlejohn led the Maroons with 13 points each while Madison Nereu also reached double-figures with 12.
- Sande nearly had a double-double with a team-high eight rebounds.Â
