Men's Basketball Wins 2023 Frankie Allen Tip-Off Tournament With Win Over Berry

The Short Story:  Four Maroons reached double-figures as the Roanoke men's basketball team won the 2023 Frankie Allen Tip-Off Tournament with a 79-58 win over Berry in the championship game on Saturday afternoon at the Cregger Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first three minutes of the game saw the score tied at 4-4 before Roanoke began to break away and reached a double-digit lead, 19-9, on a three-pointer by Zach Rosenthal with 12:20 remaining in the first half. Neither team was able to score in a three-minute draught midway through the period before a layup by Marcus Morgan put Roanoke ahead 25-12.
  • The Maroons would stretch their lead up to 23 with 1:40 left before the break, but settled for a 17 point lead at the intermission, 39-22.
  • Roanoke pushed their lead back up to 22 with just under 16 minutes left to play as the Vikings responded by cutting the lead back down to 13 with 12:26 to go. 
  • The Maroons kept Berry at bay the rest of the game, before settling in for the 79-58 win.
  • For their effort during the two games over the weekend, Joshua McClary and Trent Dawson were named to the All-Tournament team as McClary was named the tournament MVP.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Joshua Morse, Rosenthal, Morgan, and Dawson all reached double-figure points against the Vikings. 
  • Justin Kuthan nearly had a double-double with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. 
  • The Maroons shot 51% from the field while holding Berry to just 35%.

UP NEXT

  • Roanoke will have a quick break for Thanksgiving before returning to the floor on Wednesday, Nov. 29 when it hosts their first ODAC contest of the season when Ferrum pays a visit to the Cregger Center. Game time with the Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
