Maroons Continue ODAC Hot Streak With 3-1 Win Over Sweet Briar

Score: Roanoke 3, Sweet Briar 1

The Short Story:  The Roanoke field hockey team returned to Kerr Stadium on Saturday morning for matchup with the Sweet Briar Vixens. The Maroons had no trouble with the blustery windy day as they came away with a 3-1 ODAC win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Saige Bullock got Roanoke on the board first after a scramble in front of the SBC box when Madison Filson tapped the ball to Bullock who fired the goal for the 1-0 lead at 3:19.
  • Bullock would add her second goal of the game in the 20th minute off a misplay by the defense, giving the Maroons the 2-0 lead going into halftime.
  • At the end of the third quarter, Roanoke was awarded a penalty shot, which Maddy Holmes took and scored in the lower left corner of the box for the 3-0 lead.
  • The Vixens, however, would bring it back within two less than a minute later on a Maroon miscue.
  • But neither team found the scoreboard in the fourth period as Roanoke prevailed 3-1.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Maroons took 20 shots to just three for SBC. 
  • Madison Wingerter earned her fifth win of the season after playing all 90 minutes and making a save. 

UP NEXT

  • Roanoke will remain at home on Wednesday, Oct. 11 when Bridgewater pays a visit to Kerr Stadium. Game time with the Eagles is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
