Maroons Tame Panthers on the Road With Shutout

The Short Story:  It was a near clean sheet for the Roanoke field hockey team as the Maroons came away with a 6-0 shutout over Ferrum on the road at W.B. Adams Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It took nearly the first quarter before the Maroons got on the scoreboard, but Madison Filson took a pass from Tess Taloumis right in front of the Ferrum goalie and score the game winner at 12:02.
  • Just 1:03 later, Lindsey Keyes as able to take a scrum for the ball and score an insurance goal that gave Roanoke the 2-0. 
  • It was a lead the Maroons carried into halftime as neither team was able to score in the second period.
  • Grace Vernarelli scored the first of her three-straight Roanoke goals at 37:44 off a pass from Keyes, and followed that up later in the third quarter at 44:48 off another pass from Keyes, giving Roanoke the 4-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.
  • Vernarelli opened the final period with an unassisted goal at 53:20 before Isa Scheele closed out scoring in the contest at 56:35 as the Maroons took the ODAC contest 6-0.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The win was the 14th in a row against the Panthers and the third-straight shutout win. Overall Roanoke has gotten the shutout eight of the 14 contests between the teams.
  • The Maroons did not allow any Panther shots in the game, the first time this season and third straight time in the series.
  • Roanoke goalie Madison Wingerter did not have to make a single save as Ferrum did not take a shot, but earned the win.
  • Vernarelli's three goals gives her six for the season, the team-high
  • For the near clean sheet, the Maroons had the advantage in shots (29-0), shots on goal (21-0), and penalty corners (21-0).

  • Roanoke returns home on Saturday, Oct. 7 for an ODAC contest with Sweet Briar. Game time with the Vixens is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at Kerr Stadium
