The Short Story:  A pair of  goals midway through the first half set the tone as the Roanoke women's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout over the visiting Averett Cougars on Wednesday evening in the team regular season home finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maroons controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish, taking the first three shots before AU took their lone attempt of the first have late in the 17th minute.
  • It was at 20:27 that Cameron Shackford took a mis-cleared ball at the edge of the goal box and lobbed a ball over the outstretched hands of the Cougar goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
  • Just over three minutes later, MC Petrucelli was able to tap the ball up and over to Makayla Metzler in the box, who scored an insurance goal for the Maroons at 23:36, a lead Roanoke would keep at the break.
  • After a very similar play, just minutes before Morgan O'Neill found Shackford once again the goal box at 69:43 for the Maroon's third goal of the contest.
  • There was a flurry of attempts by both teams with Roanoke taking six shots in the final 10 minutes, including three on goal while AU  took three, all saves by Victoria Correll in goal for the Maroons.
