No. 12 Lynchburg Comes From Behind to Escape With Win Over Maroons

THE GAME FACTS
Score:
 #12 Lynchburg 3, Roanoke 1
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story:  The Roanoke field hockey team scored early in the first quarter and had the lead at the half, but nationally-ranked Lynchburg scored three goals in the second half to escape Kerr Stadium with a 3-1 ODAC win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grace Vernarelli found Lindsey Keyes right in front of the box at 3:29, who fired a goal to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead.
  • Despite the Hornets controlling the ball most of the first quarter and split time in the second, Roanoke maintained the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
  • Just 40 seconds in the second half, Lynchburg leveled the match at 1-1. Five minutes later LYN scored what became the game-winner and added a third goal at 51:41 to put the game out of reach.
  • The Maroons had a chance with five seconds remaining to get it back to a one goal game with a penalty stroke, but the Hornets made the save before running out the clock.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lynchburg took 13 shots in the first quarter to just two for Roanoke, but could not score.
  • Overall, the Hornets had 33 shots to the Maroons' 12.
  • Madison Wingerter tied her career-high in saves with 13, while playing all 60 minutes in the box.
