Pair of Second Half Goals Completes Maroons' Comeback Over Shenandoah

THE GAME FACTS
Score:
 Roanoke 2, Shenandoah 1
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story:  The Roanoke men's soccer team completed its comeback with less than 20 minutes left in the game as the Maroons scored a pair of goals late to swat the Hornets of Shenandoah on Saturday evening at Kerr Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SU got on the scoreboard quickly at 2:06 when a pass from the right was sent in and headed in for the goal, giving the Hornets the 1-0 lead.
  • Defense was the name of the game for the rest of the first half and most of the second as the teams headed into halftime with Shenandoah keeping a grip on their 1-0 lead.
  • It wasn't until the 74th minute that the Hornets were called for a foul in the box, alongside the back end line. Dylan Berk lined up and fired the penalty kick goal to the right side as the SU goalie dove to the left, tying the score up at 1-1 with less than 17 minutes to play.
  • Just six and half minutes later, Florin Wyss sent a ball from midfield into the box that was passed to Michael Ramsey, who one-touched a pass to Slate Danforth who fired what would be the game-winner at 79:00.
  • As neither squad could score in the final 11 minutes, the Maroons completed their comeback win over Shenandoah 2-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • After trailing in shots in the first half 5-3, the Maroons had a decided advantage in the second half taking nine shots to just one for the Hornets, with Roanoke finishing the game with a 12-6 lead in the category.
  • With the Maroons holding the Hornets to just one shot in the second half, not on goal, Luca Gustafson earned the his fifth win of the season playing the final 45 minutes of the contest.
