Maroons Win Sixth-Straight With 3-0 Shutout Over Randolph

THE GAME FACTS
Score:
 Roanoke 3, Randolph 0
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story:  A trio of second half goals lifted the Roanoke women's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout win over Randolph on Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. Prior to the start of the game, the Maroons honored its six seniors with a special recognition for their dedication to the program. Those seniors were Taylor Gallik, Tessa McMillan, Emma Barnett, MC Petrucelli, Megan Onofrei, and Morgan O'Neill.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Despite the Maroons controlling possession for most of the first half, neither team could find the back of the goal to take a lead.
  • The Maroons broke through in the second half with what became the game-winner in the 58th minute. With a pass upfield, Rebecca Carr drove the left side of the field before crossing the ball to Morgan O'Neill right in front of the goalie who fired the shot that gave the Maroons the lead 1-0 at 57:22.
  • Less than two minutes later, O'Neill was fouled inside the goal box to give the Maroons their first penalty kick of the season. Cameron Shackford easily fired a goal to the bottom left of the box, giving Roanoke the 2-0 lead.
  • With just over 10 minutes left, a scramble in front of the WildCat goal left Petrucelli with the ball who added the Maroons' third goal of the game at 79:04.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The win was Roanoke's sixth-in-a-row, including five shutouts, with all six games being played at home.
  • During the win streak, the Maroons have outscored their opponents 17-1.
  • The Maroons have now won 14 games against Randolph and are 14-0-1 all-time against the college when the WildCats have been a dual-gender institution. Previously Randolph was an all-women's school, Randolph-Macon Women's College where the Maroons hadn't lost in the final four seasons.
