Roanoke Opens ODAC Play With Win

Box Score

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 25 | Guilford 4
Records: Maroons 4-2 / 1-0 ODAC | Quakers 2-4 / 0-1 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: With the wind howling and the snow blowing, the Roanoke men's lacrosse team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play when they hosted Guilford on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons defense made it tough on their guests all game long, holding the Quakers to just 12 shots on goal, on their way to a 25-4 conference win. It marked the fourth home win of the season, third in a row, for a young Roanoke squad.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke struck quickly with a Luke Kammerman score that was followed with a Trevor Stocks goal in the opening three plus minutes of play. The Quakers would dig in defensively before Kammerman sparked a three-goal in two-minute stretch to close out the opening quarter of play.
  • George Gilbert scored his second of four goals to make it 6-0 before Guilford would finally get on the board. With 12:03 left before the half, Gilbert started an 8-0 Roanoke run to close out the first 30 minutes with a 14-1 advantage. The final two Roanoke scores, Kammerman and Luca Docking, came in an unrelease able Quaker penalty. To open the second half, Matt Hemmert gave the Maroons three scores during the two-minute man-up advantage.
  • Stocks completed his hat-trick right before Gilbert's fourth marking of the afternoon to make it 17-2. Kammerman found Hemmert on another man-up chance with Carson Peck and Charlie Goodrich closing out the frame for a 20-2 lead.
  • Roanoke would add five more, fourth quarter, scores but it was the defense that was the star of the game for the Maroons. Roanoke allowed just 12 shots on goal while they forced 25 Quaker turnovers and cleared 23 of their 25 opportunities.
  • Taylor Lewis started and played the first half, giving up just a single score while making five saves. Gilbert scored four times as did Kammerman who added three more assists, giving him 20 helpers for the season. Stocks scored three times with a quartet of Maroons adding two goals apiece.

Up Next: Roanoke wraps up their four-game home stand on Tuesday afternoon when they host Cortland at 4:00pm. It will be the final time to catch the Marrons at Kerr Stadium until April 6th.
