Big Day For Maroons in Home Opener

The Basics

The Lead: Roanoke opened the home portion of the 2022 season when they played host to Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon. After falling in their opener at William Peace, the Maroons returned home and left no doubt against the River Hawks with a 12-0 and 16-2 sweep on their home field.

Highlights:

  • After a pair of scoreless innings, the Maroons got going in the bottom of the third. Will Smith singled after an inning opening walk to give Roanoke a pair of base runners. Mason Staz plated one when he reached on an error and Jonny Wall made it 2-0 with a base hit. PK Cocolis reached on a fielder's choice as two more Maroons crossed home plate for a 4-0 lead.
  • One inning later Roanoke would use a Smith 2-run homer followed by a Wall 2-run shot to double their advantage to 8-0.
  • The Maroons would tack on four more runs to complete the 12-0 shutout.
  • Chris Dudley got the start and went five innings, giving up a pair of hits with four strikeouts. Will Turner struck out three in two innings of work with Casey Rosenthal and Alex Markus closing out the shutout.
  • Smith, Staz, and Wall combined to go 6-12 with six runs, seven RBI, and a pair of home runs. Butler was 2-4 with a pair of runs while Luke Estep went 2-2 with a run and an RBI.

Highlights:

  • Wall plated Staz to put RC in front after on inning of play.
  • After a run in the second and three more in the third, the Maroons were up 5-0. The fourth inning would see Carson McCusker single before Jacob Bonzon was hit by a pitch. McCusker scored on a Peter Nichols single to left. Staz would drive in Nichols ahead of a Cocolis 3-run bomb to push the Roanoke lead to 11-0.
  • Four more runs in the seventh followed by a single run in the eighth would make the final 16-2.
  • Jeb Byerley started and went three and two thirds before being relieved by Colby Roy. Roy was credited with the win, recording four strikeouts in his three and a third innings of work.
  • Cocolis was 2-3 with a pair of runs and six RBI. Staz was 2-4 while Hunter Andrews came off the bench to go 2-2 with a run and two RBI.

Up next: Roanoke will be right back on the diamond tomorrow when they play host to Franklin & Marshall at noon.
