Big Third Quarter Carries Maroons

Box Score

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 18 | Randolph-Macon 15
Records: Maroons 6-3 / 4-2 ODAC | Yellow Jackets 5-5 / 4-3 ODAC
Location: Ashland, Va.

The Lead: With fourth place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) on the line, Roanoke traveled to face Randolph-Macon on Wednesday afternoon. The game was close at the half but a third quarter surge that would see the Maroons out-score the Yellow Jackets 6-2 allowed Roanoke to pull away and hold on for the 18-15 ODAC win.

How it Happened:

  • Sam Balch gave Roanoke the lead just over a minute into the game.
  • After a RMC goal would tie the score, George Gilbert allow RC to retake the lead and then Ethan Caldwell would find Wyatt Whitlow to push the Roanoke advantage to 3-1.
  • Roanoke entered the second frame with a 6-3 edge, but Randolph-Macon would score twice to close the gap to a single goal.
  • However, the Maroons answered with four consecutive scores to pull away to a five goal lead. Jay Frye, Bryson Miller, and Luke Kammerman scored their first goals of the contest while Gilbert added a second to his total. Caldwell added two more assists during the 4-0 run.
  • It was the home teams turn as four Yellow Jacket scores would once again make it a one-goal lead for the Maroons. Gilbert netted his third of the first half with less than a minute on the clock and RC took an 11-9 advantage into the half.
  • RMC would outscore Roanoke 2-1 during the first five minutes of the second half before a 5-0 Roanoke spurt to end the quarter would see the Maroons with a 17-11 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
  • Randolph-Macon would outscore RC 4-1 during the final period but in the end, Roanoke would come away with an 18-15 ODAC win, taking the fourth spot in the conference standings.
  • Frye scored five goals with Gilbert adding five and Whitlow finished with three. Caldwell scored twice and handed out four helpers. In net, Taylor Lewis played the complete game, making seven stops, while picking up the win.

Up Next: Roanoke will step out of conference on Friday night when they welcome Colorado College to Kerr stadium for a 7:00pm start.
