Johnny Hughes (Salem, VA, Salem) was named tournament MVP as he scored his second goal of the weekend to lead Roanoke past Emory, 3-2 to win the 20th Annual Roanoke Invitational Saturday night. The Maroons defeated Richard Stockton, 3-1 on Friday and #18 (NSCAA) Emory, 3-2 Saturday night.
Joining Hughes on the all-tournament team is
Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County),
Chris Conover (Dagsboro, DE, Indian River),
Christopher Fisher (Morehead City, NC, West Carteret High School) and
Brian White (Virginia Beach, VA, First Colonial).
Up 1-0 in the 70th minute, Fisher found White off a cross as his shot found the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-0. Five minutes later, Emory's Javier Puga cut the Maroons lead in half as he scored from eight yards out.
Roanoke upped its lead three minutes later as Fisher found
Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) for his second assist of the night to make it, 3-1 to put the game away late.
Emory, ranked #10 in the D3Soccer.com pre-season poll, outshot Roanoke, 13-6 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Makel collected six saves on the night. Trenton Spindler had two saves for the Eagles.
The Maroons won their season-opener, 3-1 against Richard Stockton on Friday night for their first win ever over the Ospreys, who received votes in the D3Soccer.com pre-season poll.

Conover had an advance go nearly 40-yards to Fisher as he fired a shot just above the 18-yard box to make it 2-0 with 13-minutes remaining in the first half.
Freshman
Jake Shorr (Newtown Square, PA, Mercersburg Academy) found the back of the net just a minute into play in the second half to extend the Maroons lead, 3-0. The Osprey's Sal Pistone scored the only goal of the night from Randy Kohr to give the final result just three minutes left in the game.
Roanoke will travel to New Jersey next weekend to play in the Stevens Tech College Cup, Sept. 9-10. The Maroons will play Kean on Friday at 4 p.m. Tournament host Stevens Tech (#21 NSCAA/#13 D3Soccer.com) will host RC on Saturday at 8 p.m.
