EMORY, Va. --- Roanoke pulled away late in a 88-76 victory over Emory & Henry Monday evening on Bob Johnson Court at the King Center. The Maroons improve to 6-6 overall, 2-2 in the ODAC, while the Wasps dropped to 3-11, 0-7 in conference play.
Head coach Page Moir won his 230th conference game, tying coaching legend and dear friend Bob Johnson (Emory & Henry) for the record on the very court named after the long time coach. The 22-year coaching veteran has the longest tenure and is the winningest active coach in this prestigious basketball conference.
Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem) led all scorers with 20 points in addition to dishing out a career-high eight assists. He led Roanoke to its sixth win of the year, already matching the entire 2009-10 season total. Felix iced the game by knocking down all six of his free-throws down the stretch.
EHC outrebounded RC, 43-36, but Roanoke hit 47% from the floor, including 7-of-19 (36%) from three-point range. The Maroons scored 23 points off 22 Wasps turnovers which included 18 fast break points. Roanoke outscored the Emory & Henry bench, 41-17.
Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) finished with 14 points, 11 in the first half, along with six rebounds.
Kwasi Amponsah (Woodbridge, VA, Garfield) had 12 points and three steals while
Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave) added 11 points and three assists.
Terrell Johnson had a balanced game with seven points, five rebounds and two steals in 15 minutes of action.
Clay Lacy (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) contributed five points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Malcom Green led three Wasps in double-figures with 19 points, going 5-of-5 from the line. Bobby Stafford totaled 15 points, seven boards and five assists. Terrance Grigg notched a double-double with 14 makers and 11 caroms.
The men will travel to Lexington Wednesday to play against conference rival, Washington and Lee in their second meeting of the year. The Generals escaped Salem with a 75-62 win over the Maroons on Dec. 1. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Warner Center.
