Volleyball Claims Emory & Henry Invitational Title

EMORY, Va. --- Roanoke won all three matches to claim the 2010 Emory & Henry Invitational Title this weekend. The Maroons, winners of six-straight, improved to 6-2 on the year. Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) earned MVP honors while Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt) joined her on the all-tournament team.
The Maroons defeated Meredith, 3-1 on Friday evening with scores of 25-16, 26-28, 25-17 and 25-12. Roanoke now owns a 13-4 series record against the Angels, winning every meeting since 1988. Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) recorded a career-best 18 kills, including 11 from Wagner while Martin finished with 21 digs. Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt) and Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance) each totaled five blocks each.
Roanoke cruised past Sewanee and Ferrum, winning 3-0 in both contests on Saturday en route to claiming the tournament title. It was their 22nd-straight win over the Panthers, including the second this season. Against the Tigers, Roanoke improved to 3-1 in the series in what was the first meeting since 2001.
The Maroons swept the Tigers with scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-15. Samantha Klostermann (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) had seven kills, five digs and four aces while fellow freshman Kayla Paxton (Salem, VA, Salem) added six kills and six digs. Shannon Stone (Williamsburg, VA, Lafayette), who played in her first game of the season while recovering from a shoulder injury, led Roanoke with 13 assists. Bren Wilberger (Richmond, VA, Steward ) helped out with nine assists as Martin added five aces in the victory.
In the win over Ferrum, the scores were 25-8, 15-8 and 25-17. Wagner led Roanoke with eight kills and a weekend-best 16 digs. Klosterman enjoyed her best match of her young career with seven kills and 15 digs. Rachel Hawkins (Winchester, VA, Millbrook) recorded six kills. Martin accounted for eight digs as Stone had seven assists. Wilberger led the Maroons with 19 assists.
The women will travel across town to take on Hollins in non-conference action this Tuesday, Sept. 14. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start at Hollins Gym.
