Big Second Half Lifts Roanoke past Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Roanoke outscored Hampden-Sydney, 16-4 in the second half en route to a 22-10 win on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 7-1 overall, 2-0 in the ODAC. The Tigers dropped to 4-3, 0-1 in conference play.

The Maroons, ranked #8 in the Week Three USILA Top-20 Poll, earned their 26th series win over the Tigers, including their third-straight over their ODAC-foe. It is the sixth time this season the scoring total has exceeded 20 goals for Roanoke.

With the score tied at 6-all at the half, the Maroons offensive attack went into overdrive, scoring the first six goals of the second half. Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser)and Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)combined for four of the Maroons' six goals over that span to take a 12-6 lead with 7:27 remaining in the third period.

HSC scored three unanswered goals to make it a 12-9 Roanoke lead just before the fourth quarter. Kyle Jett scored two goals and Ben Clarke added the other to close the gap heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

A Brad Motskow goal made it 13-10 before Roanoke finished the game scoring nine-straight goals in the convincing 12-goal win. Nine different players scored in the final 13-minutes, including Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day) who scored his second career goal.

Roanoke held a 50-26 shots advantage and had 53 groundballs to the Tigers 35. The Maroons won 28-of-35 face-offs while 19-for-21 in clear attempts.

March scored four goals for the second-straight game, followed by Tuma's season-best three goals along with eight groundballs on the afternoon. Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)scored a season-best five points with three goals and two assists. Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)led Roanoke with three assists with two goals. Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves)chipped in two goals and one assist.

Greg Khanzadian (Syracuse, NY, Christian Brothers)won 15-of-18 face-offs with a team-high eight groundballs. Stephen Simmons (West Friendship, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)collected six groundballs.

Clarke finished with three goals and three assists to lead the Tigers. Jett also had three goals, with Cole Hawthorne adding a goal and an assist.

Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)finished with 10 saves for Roanoke, as he became the school's all-time wins leader at goalie. He passed Matt Madalon '06 with his 42nd win of his career.

The men return home on Wednesday, March 24 as they host Williams at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons won, 17-16 over the Ephs last season in the only meeting. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
